Fantasy: AFC South Report

Breakout Performers

Indianapolis-Pierre Garcon-The popular breakout pick here is Donald Brown, but I think the potential is higher with Garcon. While Brown may emerge with some value, Joseph Addai is the starter and will continue to get the majority of the carries early in the season. The Colts have one of the most consistent pass heavy offenses in the NFL and as long as the older Manning is running the huddle, this will not change. Reggie Wayne is the unquestioned number 1 receiver, but Garcon will still get plenty of attempts thrown his way. Austin Collie proved himself to be more of a Brandon Stokley slot threat clone and Anthony Gonzalez has probably injured himself twice since I began writing this article. The offense has been in the top 10 in total offense for 5 of the past 6 years, and Garcon really came on late in the year. He had a PFF rating of 4.3 in the AFC championship game and will continue to show that type of productivity this season.

Houston-Jacoby Jones-The Texans lead the NFL in passing yards per game last year and their attack should be just as potent this year. The running game will continue to struggle with the 21st ranked PFF rushing offensive line. This means Schaub will throw the ball all over the field and defenses will always shade towards the man child known as Andre Johnson. Jones scored 6 receiving touchdowns last year and even though Kevin Walters is coming back, the potential of Jones is worth taking a chance on in the late rounds.

Jacksonville-Rashad Jennings-Finding anyone to choose as a breakout star was difficult for the Jags. Everyone knows about MJD and Sims Walker and there isn’t much fantasy value left after that. Keeping that in mind, I am swinging for the fences and selecting Jennings. He showed potential as a between the tackles runner and as a solid handcuff. I have no reasons to speculate on any injury concerns for MJD, but if it does happen Jennings can step in and be productive. He is a player to keep on your radar as the preseason evolves.

Tennessee-Kenny Britt-I really wanted to show my Longhorn bias and choose Vince Young, but the sight of his new back tattoo made me think better of the idea . There is no doubt that defenses will bring extra defenders up to the line to stop Chris Johnson. This will give Vince plenty of chances to attack the man to man coverage on the outside. Kenny Britt will be the biggest benefactor as teams try and take away the human safety valve known as Bo Scaife. Britt showed an ability to beat press coverage last year and in the Titans’ short and medium passing game, he is a great fit. He could be a late round steal.
