In every interview, I get asked how I started in this business. Normally, I’ll cheekily say “I was born and raised a Broncos fan, and then I found fantasy football. It changed my life.”
And that’s the simple story.
But really, when I am completely honest with myself, I’m here for selfish reasons.
I became a research and spreadsheet junkie after my first season of fantasy. I started my fantasy life with three leagues: one family and two friend leagues. Every week I would haplessly stare at my computer. I would go back and forth about who I should start. I would move players in and out of my starting positions like a nervous tick. Sometimes, I would make a move right before kickoff, change my mind, but miss the cutoff.
Sound familiar?
I don’t do this anymore. I trust the process.
That doesn’t mean that I don’t get upset when things don’t work out. That doesn’t mean that I don’t touch my teams before kickoff. I make changes based on inactive reports and weather conditions, but I do these moves with authority. The moves mean something and I stand by them, whether the game plays out in my favor, or not.
It’s when things don’t work out how we thought they would, that we second guess the process.
Rather than throw the baby out with the bathwater, let’s focus on consistency. The process is not broken, it’s quite sound, but perhaps the perception of reliability is skewed. Here’s a look at some lessons:
