NFL Salary Cap: Three-year analysis for all 32 NFL teams

Salary cap situations can change in a hurry in the NFL, as teams have many ways to manipulate player contracts and move money around. Two seemingly opposed idioms apply here in perpetuity: 

  1. There’s always money in the banana stand 
  2. The bill always comes due

While a singular snapshot of each NFL team’s salary cap situation will never perfectly capture all of the various intricacies of NFL roster management, it is still a fruitful exercise that can teach us a lot about the forecast for each team going forward.

We’ve come up with a five-pronged approach to analyze each club’s salary cap situation as of today and up to the 2023 season. Below is a table that breaks down how each team stacks up according to each metric, followed by definitions and/or explanations for each.
