Fantasy Football: Injury notes and analysis for Week 4

Detroit Lions RB Jamaal Williams and Chicago Bears RB Khalil Herbert are locked in as top-15 fantasy options with D’Andre Swift (ankle, shoulder) and David Montgomery (knee, ankle) officially ruled out.

Los Angeles Chargers WR Mike Williams remains a must-start option with Keenan Allen (hamstring) again sidelined. Josh Palmer can be fired up as a solid top-40 option at the position.

Expect rather monstrous workloads for Raiders WR Davante Adams and TE Darren Waller with both Hunter Renfrow (concussion) and Foster Moreau (knee) both ruled out.

Chargers QB Justin Herbert (ribs): Upgraded to a full practice on Thursday and will start Sunday against the Texans. Herbert is seemingly healthier and is once again a must-start upside QB1 option.

Saints QB Jameis Winston (back, ankle): Officially doubtful. Moving to a far less aggressive quarterback in Andy Dalton should do wonders for Alvin Kamara’s target share. While losing Winston isn’t great for Chris Olave’s air-yard total, the reality that both Michael Thomas (foot, out) and Jarvis Landry (ankle, questionable) are both banged up keeps Olave in the low-end WR2 conversation.

Expert Injury Analysis: Winston and Thomas have been DNPs all week. Thomas has already been ruled out, and I do not believe Winston plays in Week 4

Patriots QB Mac Jones (ankle): Ruled out as expected. Brian Hoyer will start for the Patriots in their Week 4 matchup against the Packers. Everyone involved should be downgraded. The Patriots are implied to score a week-low 15.5 points.

Expert Injury Analysis: Jones suffered a high-ankle sprain on the last play of the game in Week 3. And while both the head coach and player sounded optimistic about him playing in Week 4, there was never a realistic shot of him suiting up. This injury averages a four to six return to play timeline.

Jets QB Zach Wilson (knee): Not listed on the final injury report and will start Sunday against the Steelers. I’d prefer to see just how healthy Wilson is before going out of my way to squeeze anybody involved in this offense into a starting lineup. This goes for running back, wide receiver and tight end alike — the Jets are implied to score just 19 points (third-lowest in Week 4) with their erratic second-year banged-up gunslinger under center.

Cowboys QB Dak Prescott (right thumb): Will be back in Week 5 at the earliest. International sensation Cooper Rush will start the Cowboys’ Week 4 matchup against the Commanders.

Expert Injury Analysis: Prescott was a DNP due to his thumb injury. He is getting closer to returning to play, but I think he has another week or two.

Colts RB Jonathan Taylor (toe): Didn’t practice on Wednesday but appears set up for his usual robust workload after finishing the week with back-to-back full practices. Taylor always has week-winning upside in his potential range of outcomes, so continue to fire him up as a top-three back.

Expert Injury Analysis: Taylor was a DNP Wednesday but returned to practice Thursday with a toe injury. I don’t have any doubts about his Week 4 availability.

Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey (thigh): Didn’t manage to get in a limited practice until Friday, but head coach Matt Rhule said that he’s “very hopeful” that CMC will suit up. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has gone so far as to say that McCaffrey is indeed expected to play. Managers will need to have a backup plan just in case, given that the Cardinals-Panthers matchup s happening at 4 pm ET, but slide CMC into that RB1 spot in the meantime.

Expert Injury Analysis: McCaffrey was a DNP Wednesday and Thursday but returned to practice Friday. It is looking more likely that he is dealing with a quad bruise and not a strain. I expect him to give it a go in Week 4.

Vikings RB Dalvin Cook (shoulder): Isn’t even listed on the final injury report after getting back-to-back full practices in to end the week. Fire up Cook in lineups of all shapes and sizes.

Saints RB Alvin Kamara (ribs): Expected to play through the issue once again, this time in London against the Vikings. Kamara receives a nice projected target boost with gunslinger Jameis Winston (back, ankle) sidelined in favor of Andy Dalton. Fire up Kamara as an upside RB1, as always.

Lions RB D’Andre Swift (ankle, shoulder): Officially ruled out. Jamaal Williams handled 20, 18 and 19 touches in three games without Swift last season; his middling 63%, 47% and 42% snap rates could easily boom when he’s not playing through the pain himself. Williams deserved to be the top waiver wire addition of the week thanks to his legit standalone value even when Swift is healthy enough to suit up. He’s my overall RB12 ahead of Sunday’s potential shootout (lol, but seriously) against the Seahawks.

Cardinals RB James Conner (knee): Not listed on the final injury report. Conner always offers multi-touchdown upside, regardless of the matchup. He’s the definition of a volume-based RB2 inside of an offense with little place to go but up.

Ravens RB J.K. Dobbins (chest): Good to go after back-to-back full practices to end the week. Dobbins is expected to see a bigger and bigger workload as the season goes on; he’s still more of an RB3 than RB2 as long as he splits the backfield with Justice Hill so evenly, but he’s a viable FLEX play in deeper leagues ahead of this potential rain/wind-induced matchup.

Packers RB A.J. Dillon (knee): Good to go for Sunday. Fire up Dillon as a top-20 option with plenty of second-half volume likely on the way with Green Bay sitting as comfortable 9-point home favorites against the Brian Hoyer-led Patriots.

Bears RB David Montgomery (knee, ankle): Officially ruled out, paving the way for waiver wire darling Khalil Herbert to take over as the Bears’ three-down back. Herbert has averaged a spectacular 7.3 yards per carry this season and deserves to be fired up as a top-15 back. I would start him ahead of guys such as Cordarrelle Patterson (knee, questionable), Javonte Williams, James Conner, A.J. Dillon and more. Fire up Herbert in DFS-cash lineups, as well.

Expert Injury Analysis: Montgomery suffered an ankle/knee injury last week. The replay looked like a classic high-ankle/MCL sprain, but head coach Matt Eberflus says it’s just an ankle sprain and he is day-to-day. He will miss Week 4, and it will be worth monitoring the situation heading into Week 5.

Falcons RB Cordarrelle Patterson (knee): Managed to squeeze in a limited practice on Friday after being out on Wednesday and Thursday with a combination of “knee” and “rest.” The Falcons play at 1 pm ET on Sunday; fantasy managers should prepare to have a backup plan. If active, C-Patt will be his usual solid RB2 self. If not, expect Tyler Allgeier to lead the way, albeit not in a fully featured role with Avery Williams and Caleb Huntley also tentatively expected to be involved. Allgeier would be more of a mid-tier RB3 if forced into the starting role due to the uncertainty of just how big his workload will be.

Expert injury analysis: Patterson was a DNP for Wednesday and Thursday’s practice. The official report says “Resting Player/Knee,” leading me to believe that this is just a health management situation. I am optimistic he will play in Week 4, but this does need to be monitored.

Eagles RB Miles Sanders (hip), Boston Scott (rib): Sanders is fine, but Scott is out, meaning the Eagles’ usually annoying three-headed backfield has been condensed to two. Yes, Jalen Hurts remains a threat to steal goal-line touchdowns; just realize Sanders is set up for 15-plus touches inside of an offense implied to score 26 points — the third-highest mark in the league. Gainwell is more of a PPR-only FLEX option; I do like his tournament appeal as a GPP-dart on full-PPR sites like DraftKings.

Broncos RB Melvin Gordon (neck): Didn’t receive a final injury designation and is good to go for Sunday’s potential sneaky shootout against the Raiders. The presence of Mike Boone in Week 3 hurt both Gordon and Javonte Williams; the former is a mid-tier RB3 and the latter is more of a mid-tier RB2 against Maxx Crosby and company. Here’s to hoping for better days ahead for the Broncos’ 31st-ranked scoring offense.

Texans RB Dameon Pierce (hip): Practiced in full in back-to-back practices and wasn’t given a final injury designation. Pierce said he feels good and is set for a full workload. He’s a volume-based borderline RB2 with more value in standard leagues than full-PPR formats.

49ers RB Tyrion Davis-Price (ankle): Expected to miss multiple weeks, locking in Jeff Wilson as a sneaky-solid candidate to see 20-plus touches Monday night against the Rams. Wilson is my RB21 this week ahead of guys like Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Rhamondre Stevenson.

Bills WR Gabriel Davis (ankle), Jake Kumerow (ankle): Davis is listed as questionable, but he personally said, “I’m playing Sunday.” They need him to man one of the outside receiver spots with Kumerow ruled out. Davis is in the borderline WR2 conversation with as much weekly multi-touchdown upside as anyone ahead of Sunday’s potential shootout against the Ravens (if Mother Nature cooperates).

Saints WR Michael Thomas (foot), Jarvis Landry (ankle), Tre’Quan Smith (concussion), Deonte Harty (foot): Thomas is out, Landry is questionable and Smith and Harty are good to go. The absence of Thomas boosts Chris Olave to low-end WR2 territory despite the absence of Jameis Winston (back, ankle). Landry is a risky WR5 without assurance of good health. Smith is a desperate FLEX play coming off a stellar 4-105-0 performance in his first game of the season.

Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown (ankle), D.J. Chark (ankle), Josh Reynolds (ankle): ARSB is out, while Chark and Reynolds are questionable. There are plenty of targets to go around with D’Andre Swift (ankle, shoulder, out) also sidelined; just realize this offense might in fact embrace the run game and/or simply not be as effective as usual. Chark and Reynolds will have deserved boosts if active and can be ranked inside the position’s top-48, but don’t feel like they need to be forced into lineups.

Expert Injury Analysis: Chark was limited Wednesday and DNP Thursday with an ankle injury. I believe Thursday was a rest day, and I am optimistic he is ready to go for Week 4.

Packers WR Allen Lazard (ankle), Christian Watson (hamstring): Both are good to go against a Patriots secondary that could be without S Kyle Dugger (knee, questionable), S Adrian Phillips (ribs, questionable), S Joshuah Bledsoe (groin) and CB Jalen Mills (hamstring, questionable). The return of Watson isn’t great for Romeo Doubs, but the waiver wire darling is still an upside WR4 at worst. I’m giving Lazard the benefit of the doubt as the No. 1 pass-game option for at least one more week — he’s a low-floor WR3 with the Packers (-9) not exactly being expected to have to keep their foot on the gas.

Chargers WR Keenan Allen (hamstring), Jalen Guyton (knee, IR): Allen will miss another week after seemingly re-aggravating the issue during Thursday’s practice. Mike Williams needs to be in lineups of all shapes and sizes, Josh Palmer is a rock solid top-40 option at the position, and Deandre Carter is even someone to take a look at in deeper leagues with too many FLEX spots.

Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin (hamstring), Julio Jones (knee), Russell Gage (hamstring), Breshad Perriman (knee, hamstring): Godwin and Julio are both considered game-time decisions. Gage also seems more questionable than usual after being downgraded to a DNP on Friday. Perriman is doubtful. At least Mike Evans is back from suspension, but fantasy managers can’t rely on any of the above players due to the Buccaneers facing the Chiefs on Sunday night. Evans is an upside WR1, otherwise, avoid this passing game for another week.

Expert Injury Analysis: Godwin logged his first limited practice and followed it up with a rest day since injuring his hamstring. I would wait another week due to the 20% recurrence rate. Jones has been limited with a knee injury, but I expect him to make his return to action in Week 4.

Giants WR Sterling Shepard (knee, IR), Kadarius Toney (hamstring), Wan’Dale Robinson (knee): Both are out. This leaves Richie James, Kenny Golladay and David Sills in three-receiver sets. Some people apparently want to play James as a low-priced DFS punt, but that sounds like a terrible way to spend Sunday if you ask me. There’s one player worth a damn in this offense as far as fantasy purposes go, and his name is Saquon Barkley.

Cardinals WR Marquise Brown (foot, rest), A.J. Green (knee), Greg Dortch (back), Rondale Moore (hamstring), DeAndre Hopkins (suspension), Antoine Wesley (groin, IR): AJG is out, while Hollywood and Moore are questionable. At least Dortch is good to go. Seriously, though, this is a walking graveyard of a wide receiver room at the moment. Brown’s limited practice on Friday was listed as “rest/foot,” so he’ll be a recommended start as an upside WR2 if active. Neither Dortch nor Moore will be super enticing options in their first week together with reps uncertain.

Chiefs WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling (abdomen), Mecole Hardman (heel): MVS is questionable, Hardman is good to go. Justin Watson would probably replace Valdes-Scantling in three-WR sets, although it’d be fair to give JuJu Smith-Schuster and Hardman moderate upgrades, as well. JuJu remains the only recommended start in most normal-sized leagues; he’s a WR3 ahead of Sunday night’s tough matchup against the Buccaneers.

Expert Injury Analysis: Valdes-Scantling was limited Wednesday and a DNP Thursday with an abdomen issue. The injury and severity are unclear.

Raiders WR Hunter Renfrow (concussion): Mack Hollins will once again have a bigger role than normal ahead of Sunday’s potential shootout against the Broncos. At least that’s what we would have thought this time last month. Anyway, Davante Adams and Darren Waller should each see rather large target shares unless Hollins continues to inexplicably lead the team in receiving.

Cowboys WR Michael Gallup (knee): Not listed on the final injury report and thus expected to make his 2022 season debut. Of course, this reality means that limited snaps are a possibility, so I’d really try to refrain from going to Gallup in most league sizes until Week 5 when we have a better idea of his early-season role. Still, Gallup’s presence hurts Noah Brown’s FLEX appeal either way. The only player in this offense that needs to be started with Dak Prescott (right thumb, out) sidelined is CeeDee Lamb.

Patriots WR Jakobi Meyers (knee): Practiced in a limited fashion all week, but isn’t a recommended start either way with Mac Jones (ankle) sidelined. DeVante Parker deserves a slight upgrade if Meyers is again sidelined, then again don’t feel the need to squeeze Parker into lineups either. The Patriots are implied to score a week-low 15.5 points.

Jaguars WR Zay Jones (ankle): Downgraded to a DNP on Thursday before getting in a limited session on Friday. Jones is a great discount-DFS option if active on a full-PPR site like DraftKings. He also warrants borderline WR3 consideration ahead of a potential Jaguars-Eagles shootout. If sidelined, Christian Kirk will be even more of a must-start option, while Marvin Jones, Evan Engram and maybe even Travis Etienne would get nice upgrades. Side note: I LOVE Etienne’s over 17.5 receiving yards prop this week. He’s hit it all three weeks to start the season, leads the position in yards per reception and could finally see a more negative game script (Jaguars +6.5) than the last two weeks.

Expert Injury Analysis: Jones was a DNP Thursday due to an ankle injury. Late additions to the injury report are never good, and I am concerned about his chances to play in Week 4.

Eagles WR DeVonta Smith (back): Not listed on the final injury report. Fire up Smith as the upside WR2 that he’s been in back-to-back weeks inside of the Eagles’ league-best passing attack.

Titans WR Treylon Burks (illness), Kyle Philips (shoulder): Burks is good to go after only missing practice on Wednesday. Philips is listed as questionable. His return would warrant a minor downgrade to Burks, who has managed to secure a full-time role in this passing game during the fellow rookie’s absence. Philips isn’t a realistic fantasy option until we have a better idea of how big his role is.

Bears WR Velus Jones (hamstring), Byron Pringle (calf, IR): Listed as questionable and seems to have a legit chance of playing after getting in a full practice on Friday. Of course, none of these Bears receivers are recommended fantasy options as long as the offense looks so generally incapable of completing a forward pass. Even Darnell Mooney barely cracks the position’s top 50 players

Panthers WR Laviska Shenault (hamstring): Questionable and can’t be relied on as a realistic fantasy option despite last week’s insanely cool touchdown.

Expert Injury Analysis: Shenault was limited Wednesday and held out Thursday with a hamstring strain. This is a concerning soft-tissue injury for skill players. The limited practice Friday makes me feel better about his chances, but he is unlikely to be at 100%.

Bills TE Dawson Knox (back, hip): Officially questionable. If active, he’s a touchdown-dependent TE1 as always. Still, Knox deserves to be ranked closer to the TE12 than TE1 due to his potential for limited usage/effectiveness while playing through the pain.

Expert injury analysis: Knox has been limited with a back/hip issue, but I believe he will play in Week 4.

Browns TE David Njoku (knee): Was downgraded to a DNP on Thursday out of nowhere but practiced in full on Friday and is good to go for Sunday. Still, the new issue could lead to less of a full-time role than normal; I’ll be answering most close start/sit questions involving Njoku with the other guy, and I prefer Evan Engram as this week’s premiere low-priced DFS tight end.

Lions TE T.J. Hockenson (foot): Good to go and expected to see all kinds of target volume inside of a passing game definitely without Amon-Ra St. Brown (ankle, out) and  D’Andre Swift (ankle, out). Even D.J. Chark (ankle, questionable) and Josh Reynolds (ankle, questionable) aren’t guaranteed to suit up. Hockenson is locked in as a top-eight tight end overdue for a boom performance.

Cowboys TE Dalton Schultz (knee): Officially questionable. The chance for limited snaps and/or effectiveness without Dak Prescott (right thumb, out) under center makes Schultz more of a borderline TE1 as opposed to a locked-in top-six option. Still, the fact that he was able to practice in a limited fashion all week is good news for his chances of having a full-time role again sooner rather than later.

Expert Injury Analysis: Schultz has been limited with a knee injury. I expect him to be back in Week 4, but be careful starting him due to his sprained PCL.

Titans TE Austin Hooper (neck): Good to go, but not a realistic fantasy option in an offense that regularly rotates multiple players at the position.

Expert Injury Analysis: Hooper was a DNP Wednesday and a limited participant Thursday with a neck injury. I believe he will be ready to go for Week 4 should you absolutely need him.

Raiders TE Foster Moreau (knee): Is officially out, locking Darren Waller into a potentially monstrous workload considering Hunter Renfrow (concussion) is also sidelined. I LOVE Waller this week as a GPP-bet in DFS; he’s obviously locked into starting season-long lineups whenever healthy enough to suit up.

Bears TE Ryan Griffin (Achilles): Listed as doubtful, meaning Cole Kmet will once again be the featured tight end inside of easily the NFL’s least-productive passing attack. He’s a throw-up-in-your-mouth TE2 who really shouldn’t be started if you can at all help it.

Chargers TE Donald Parham (hamstring): Listed as questionable. His return would be a slight ding to Gerald Everett, although the Chargers’ starting tight end would still be a viable low-end TE1 who I have ranked ahead of guys like David Njoku and Pat Freiermuth regardless.

Texans TE Brevin Jordan (ankle), TE Pharaoh Brown (shoulder): Jordan is out, and Brown is questionable. The team is expected to again make Jordan Akins active. None are realistic fantasy options with a full-committee approach on the way.

Other

Ravens LT Ronnie Stanley (ankle) is listed as questionable after getting in back-to-back full practices to start the week. He didn’t practice on Friday but was listed with “rest.” His presence would obviously be a nice boost to the entire Ravens offense.

Bills secondary is all kinds of banged up, with S Micah Hyde (neck, IR) and Tre’Davious White (knee, PUP) potentially being joined on the sideline by S Jordan Poyer (foot, questionable) as well as CB Xavier Rhodes (hamstring), Christian Benford (hand, out) and Dane Jackson (neck, questionable).

Browns DE Myles Garrett (shoulder, biceps) and Jadeveon Clowney (ankle) are both questionable. Neither practiced all week. Their absences would be great news for everyone involved in the Falcons offense and would make Marcus Mariota particularly cash-game viable in DFS land.

The Patriots secondary could be without each of S Kyle Dugger (knee, questionable), S Adrian Phillips (ribs, questionable), S Joshuah Bledsoe (groin, questionable) and CB Jalen Mills (hamstring, questionable). Not great when you’re facing the two-time reigning, defending MVP of the NFL.

49ers LT Trent Williams’ (ankle) expected absence could lead to generally reduced effectiveness for the entire offense. The particularly big problem could be more pass-blocking duties for TE George Kittle.
