Giants TE Will Tye likely to see fewer snaps with additions of Engram, Ellison

In the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the Giants selected TE Evan Engram from Ole Miss — who will play as an inline tight end.

Early in free agency, New York inked Rhett Ellison to a four-year deal. Ellison played just 260 snaps for Minnesota in 2016 — 82.7 percent coming at TE, contrary to popular belief that he primarily played fullback.

Throughout his career, Ellison has mainly been used as a blocker, staying in on run or passing plays 73.5 percent of the time. In 2016, Giants tight end Will Tye ranked 61st of 63 qualifying TEs with a run-blocking grade of 33.7.

Engram should be used as a passing threat, replacing the most valuable piece of Tye’s game. Engram lead the 2017 TE draft class with 2.59 yards per route run.

If the Giants only keep three TEs for the final 53-man roster, Tye could be on the bubble if he fails to beat out 2016 sixth-round pick Jerell Adams, who played 204 snaps as a rookie.
