Dallas Cowboys Sign Veteran OT Jason Peters

  • Peters signed a one-year deal and will start on the practice squad as he gets up to speed with the offense.
  • The 18-year veteran spent last season with the Chicago Bears and started 15 games, earning a 77.5 overall grade. He’s never graded worse than 67.0 in a season.
  • The Cowboys recently lost nine-time Pro Bowler Tyron Smith to a significant hamstring injury, and he is unlikely to return before December.
  • Dallas drafted Tulsa’s Tyler Smith in the first round of April’s draft with the hopes of him becoming their future franchise left tackle. But before Tyron Smith’s injury, he was exclusively playing left guard.
  • The expectation is the rookie will get the start at left tackle in Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. What happens from there will likely be determined by his performance.

New York Jets Leave Door Open For QB Zach Wilson To Play Week 1

  • Head coach Robert Saleh told reporters that Wilson went through a workout on Monday and there’s still an outside chance he could start on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens.
  • It would be a surprise if Joe Flacco is not named the starter, but the team would like to see how Wilson’s knee responds. The team will announce a final decision on Wednesday.
  • The second-year quarterback suffered a bone bruise and a meniscus tear during the Jets' first preseason game on August 12. He underwent surgery on August 16, and the reported timeline for a return was 2-4 weeks. The team has consistently said they will not rush him back.
  • If Flacco does get the start, it’ll be the first time playing against his former team since he was traded in 2019. He earned a 58.8 PFF grade in his lone start for the Jets last season.

Jacksonville Jaguars RB James Robinson To Play Week 1

  • Robinson tore his Achilles tendon in Week 16 of last season, but it seems like his recovery went as smoothly as possible.
  • The former undrafted free agent had an up-and-down year under Urban Meyer last season, totaling 767 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. He earned a 77.1 PFF rushing grade. As a rookie, Robinson tallied 1,070 rushing yards and 10 total touchdowns.
  • The Jaguars have been leaning heavily on former first-round pick Travis Etienne throughout camp. It's unclear how things will shake out now that Robinson is back in the fold, but it’s safe to assume Jacksonville will slowly ease him in to start the season.

Detroits Lions Place OL Halapoulivaati Vaitai On Injured Reserve

  • The exact injury is currently unknown, but Vaitai will now have to miss at least the first four games of the regular season.
  • Vaitai finished as the highest-graded Lions player in the preseason, with a 92.0 PFF grade. He finished with a 77.3 overall grade in the final nine games, top-10 among starting guards over that span.
  • The Lions will now have to rely on Logan Stenberg or Tommy Kraemer to replace him to start the year.
  • Detroit also claimed former Browns guard Drew Forbes off waivers on Monday, so he’ll also be in the mix.

Carolina Panthers Add Three Veteran Players

  • The Panthers signed edge Henry Anderson to the active roster and WR Preston Williams and safety Marquise Blair to the practice squad.
  • Anderson was released by the New England Patriots last week after appearing in four games with them last season. His best statistical season came in 2018 with the Jets when he had seven sacks and earned a 74.3 PFF grade. He’s earned a run-defense grade of over 68.0 in six out of the seven seasons in his career.
  • Williams spent the last few years in Miami and flashed as a rookie in 2019, recording 32 catches for 428 yards and three touchdowns in just eight games. He earned a 69.4 receiving grade that season, but injuries have limited his production over the last two seasons.
  • Blair was a second-round pick of the Seahawks in 2019 and showed some promise as a rookie, appearing in 14 games and earning a 78.5 PFF grade. However, like Preston Williams, his last two seasons have been injury-riddled, and he’s played in just 182 total snaps. He was released by Seattle last week.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Name Luke Goedeke Starting Left Guard

  • The Bucs lost Ali Marpet to retirement earlier this offseason and then lost his likely replacement, Aaron Stinnie, to a torn ACL in the preseason.
  • Tampa traded up in the second round of April’s draft to select Goedeke, who played right tackle at Central Michigan and earned a 92.2 PFF grade in 2021.
  • All three starters on the interior of Tom Brady’s offensive line will be new, with Goedeke replacing Marpet, Robert Hainsey replacing the injured Ryan Jensen, and veteran Shaq Mason replacing Alex Cappa.
