Fantasy: Football Stock Market - Week 11

Football Stock Market is a weekly article during the NFL season which examines players you should buy or sell in your fantasy league.

Buy

Dwayne Bowe

Week 10 Stats: 2 Rec (6 Tgts), 17 Yds, 0 TDs

Allow me to apologize to for doubting Dwayne Bowe earlier this season. I forgot how beastly he can be. While there’s no way to know whether he will succeed without Matt Cassel, this is an ideal time to pry him away from his current owner.

To this point, Bowe’s 6.4 rating in the passing game is 12th best for his position. He also ranks as a top 20 wide receiver in touchdowns, receiving yards, receptions and pass targets. Take a chance he will continue to perform. He’s a special talent and as long as the Chiefs stay engaged he should stay on track.

Ahmad Bradshaw

Week 10 Stats: DNP (Injured)

This is Bradshaw’s second appearance here. In most cases it would mean I was way off on my earlier suggestion. In this case, it has everything to do with the foot injury he suffered. It has caused him to miss two games and likely more. Just as I suggested taking a chance on Jahvid Best last week, Bradshaw is a great candidate to buy low and hope for high rewards.

Like Best, Bradshaw offers high value in the passing game as well. He still ranks as a top 20 running back in receiving yards, receptions and pass targets. Also, his elusive rating of 60.6 is fourth best in the league. This means you can count on him to escape tackles and continue charging away for yardage and racking up fantasy points.

Alex Smith

Week 10 Stats: 19/30, 242 Yds, 1 TD, 1 Int

Injuries are always a part of football. This past weekend saw nearly 20 players go down with season-ending injuries. In case you don’t have a backup quarterback, I would take a shot and store Alex Smith away. Hopefully you will never insert him into your lineup. If you do, there's not many more you can rely on knowing they won't throw your week away with a multitude of turnovers.

Smith's 93.66 PFF QB Rating only trails Aaron Rodgers, Eli Manning and Drew Brees. Of current starting quarterbacks, only Tim Tebow has thrown fewer interceptions. Finally, I am most impressed by his accuracy. According to the PFF Quarterback Accuracy Percentage, Smith is currently the third most accurate passer. This metric removes passes thrown away, spikes and dropped passes.

By choosing Smith, you will likely not be rewarded with a three touchdown day, but you might take more of a risk selecting others.

Mark Ingram

Week 10 Stats: 8 Att, 11 Yds, 0 TDs

It’s difficult to rely on Mark Ingram to do a whole lot, but since you can likely get him at a very low-cost it’s worth a shot.

Prior to his heel injury, Ingram had scored a touchdown in three of four games. In his return back to the lineup, he ran ineffectively but led the team in carries.

One step at a time here.

Hold

Cam Newton

Week 10 Stats: 23/38, 212 Yds, 0 TDs, 1 Int, 7 Att, 54 Yds, 0 TDs

Watching back last week’s game it looked like Cam Newton's lack of production was more of an anomaly than anything else. Turnovers, sacks, dropped passes, penalties and running out of time seemed to hampered each and every drive. Chalk this up as “one of those days”. Newton has been too elite to give up on him now.

Sell

Larry Fitzgerald

Week 10 Stats: 7 Rec (13 Tgts), 146 Yds, 2 TDs

My brain aches as I decide what to do with Larry Fitzgerald. Will this be his best game of the year or are their more like it on the horizon? My instincts are telling me to sell, but please sell high. Do not sell yourself short in trading away Fitzgerald. While I like some things about his remaining schedule, it’s not enough to make me think this is not the peak of this season’s production, especially with the return of Kevin Kolb likely coming within weeks.

Kolb has been one of the league’s worst starting quarterbacks. His 81.35 PFF QB Rating is only slightly higher than Donovan McNabb and is worse than Sam Bradford and Tarvaris Jackson. Also, Tim Tebow has thrown only one fewer touchdown pass in half the attempts. He’s also been sacked 24 times this season. Only three other quarterbacks have been sacked more. I just can’t trust Fitzgerald’s production will lead me through a playoff run.

Chris Johnson

Week 10 Stats: 27 Att, 130 Yds, 1 TD, 4 Rec, (5 Tgts), 144 Yds, 0 TDs

Are you going to rely on the results of one game or eight? I just can’t trust Chris Johnson has turned it around in full. In likelihood, you have come this far without much contribution from Johnson. Some of you have already replaced him and left him to rot on your bench. Take this opportunity to sell now. In fact, I have someone trying to sell him to me right now. In my case, I will only consider it if another deal goes through where I can improve depth elsewhere. This way my team does not rely on whether he finds his rhythm or not. So, unless this is the case, I suggest you send him packing.
